Counter-Strike: Global Offensive

Despite the unhappy campers that protested against Valve on the early morning of August 10, 2011 for failing to release Half-Life 3, the company delivered other startling news for fans. On Friday August 12th, Valve issued a press release confirming the 2012 release of Counter Strike: Global Offensive. Valve is a little company you might have heard of before. You know the creators of best-selling game franchises such as Half-Life, Left 4 Dead, Portal, and Team Fortress. Perhaps they are most recognized for pioneering Steam, a game platform that distributes and manages over 1,500 games directly to a community of more than 30 million players around the world as stated on their website. And now they are coming back even stronger with the anticipated release of Counter Strike: Global Offensive.

The game will be playable at PAX Prime this month and Eurogamer Expo in September. The company promises that the game will features new maps, characters, and weapons as well as new gameplay modes, matchmaking, and leader board. As quoted on Steam:

“Counter-Strike took the gaming industry by surprise when the unlikely MOD became the most played online PC action game in the world almost immediately after its release in August 1999,” said Doug Lombardi at Valve. “For the past 12 years, it has continued to be one of the most-played games in the world, headline competitive gaming tournaments and selling over 25 million units worldwide across the franchise. CS: GO promises to expand on CS’ award-winning gameplay and deliver it to gamers on the PC as well as the next gen consoles and the Mac.”

Look for more information to be released later this year.

PlayStation Network PLAY

Well it’s a lot like Xbox Live Summer of Arcade, but I can’t deny that PLAY has a few interesting incentives over its counterpart. Announced on their website on August 5:

With every purchase of a PLAY title in the PlayStation Store throughout the duration of the program, you’ll receive a separate piece of DLC for each game, plus a new theme with every pre-order. If these incentives aren’t enough, if you’re 18 years or older and purchase all four PLAY titles in the PlayStation Store, you’ll get a voucher code for PAYDAY: The Heist as a bonus gift. And, PlayStation Plus subscribers will get an automatic 20% off every purchase.”

I don’t know about you, but I for one want to see Microsoft compete with what PLAY is offering. 20% off for plus subscribers is a pretty good deal. And I like the idea of receiving DLC and/or a theme with my purchase or pre-order. Don’t get me wrong, Microsoft’s Summer of Arcade has been very successful and this year’s games in my opinion have been some of the best. The competition between the two companies just gives you something extra to think about when you are deciding to buy a downloadable title for your Xbox or you PS3.

Starting August 24, PLAY will feature:

  • Street Fighter III Third Strike Online Edition
  • August 31st, DeathSpank threequel The Baconing
  • September 7th, Majesco’s 2D platformer BloodRayne: Betrayal
  • September 14th, Sega’s Renegade Ops
