Everything seemed to be going right for Cora. She had a wonderful fiance, a great best friend and a fulfilling life. One day, a tragic event caused that life to crumble around her. She turned to her best friend in her time of need. They embarked on a search for answers, delving deeper into a web of magic and destruction. The closer they got to the truth, the more questions they had. To Cora, magic was the stuff of fairy tales. Immersed into a very different kind of world, the real storm was just beginning to take hold.
“It felt like I was nowhere yet everywhere all at once. I was invisible and completely panicked. The millions of pieces I haddissolved to drift on the breeze and away from my nightmares. It was kind of like floating weightless in a pool, perfectly relaxing. The warm breeze from the window embraced and soothed me. I let the air current carry me as far as it could through the summer city.”
“Defeated, I closed my eyes and took a few calming breaths trying to relax myself. I pictured the dandelion in the park today and took a deep breath as to blow the fluffy seeds in all directions. I pretended I was light and fluffy and started to feel a tingling in my body. I began to feel as light as the dandelion seeds and soon I felt like mist floating. This time, I tried to keep myself in the room, swirling in a humid block.”
My Thoughts on Dissolve:
Dissolve is a difficult novel to actually describe as it has many elements that come together. Imagine rat race in an end of the world type scenario, but you are immune to the destruction plaguing mankind. On top of this immunity, you are given a supernatural power, shoved with a bunch of strangers except your best friend, and sent on a wild goose chase while a creep watches your every move. And on top of this all …Your fiancé, whom you loved with every inch of your soul, was murdered most likely because of you. Welcome to Cora’s new world where she can disappear and reappear on a whim.
However, nothing comes without its price.
I kept things a bit shorter than usual because there is so much that shouldn’t be told. Dissolve is the type of story that readers need to experience firsthand. Personally, I found the story to be quite solid in the fact that I was entertained and would love to read more. The suspense building was well written, and I felt the pacing was perfect. The cliffhanger ending wasn’t expected, but it worked beautifully.
Characters were also developed rather well, and I did find them believable and relatable. Cora’s flip flopping feelings fit, though some women/men may never admit they would feel the same. Nessa is the best friend we all love to lean on, and even when she is hurt she will push it down to be there for her friend. Both were likeable, and left a lasting impression.
On the other hand, I did feel that descriptive terminology would have benefited from being a little more varied. I do realize that it can be difficult to find new words to portray the image you see in your mind, but as a reader it can be repetitive and a turn-off.
Overall, I would still highly recommend Dissolve to older young adult audiences (around 17) as well as adults of all ages who enjoy the supernatural, end of the world scenarios, and a whole lot of mystery and suspense. I also feel that this is an author to watch as she grows in her writing ability and hones her style down to perfection.
