Overview:

Elise had no idea when she came home that day that she’d end up mated to a complete stranger. A new Alpha and the need for an alliance between packs have made her a pawn. WINNER OF THE FPSSA – BEST ROMANCE and the SKOW – BEST VILLIAN

EXCERPT: She lay beside him, staring blankly at the ceiling. The deed was done. They were mated. It didn’t matter that she had no love for him nor he for her. Political alliances were more important than feelings, or so she had been told. That fact was cold comfort right now as her heart broke within her.

My Thoughts on The Mating:

The Mating is the story of eighteen year old Elise. The youngest child of a werewolf alpha, she is unknowingly placed into an arranged mating with a neighboring pack’s alpha and forced to leave her family and friends behind in exchange for his pack. While she is quickly accepted by her new mate Kane and his pack, problems begin to arise amongst the pack even before her arrival.

Just before her arrival, an oil company begins showing interest in the packs land. Some barrels of oil left unattended leak into the packs lake causing an oil spill, and a pack member is shot when patrolling the land. As if all these problems weren’t bad enough, Elise also has to deal with a rival for Kane’s already limited attention. Not only determined to make Elise leave, Marla is determined to become Kane’s mate.

I stumbled across this book in a strange way. I found the rough draft on an indie writing site, and was excited to find out that it had been published into an eBook. This is one of my favorite werewolf novels because of how much detail was put into the overall story. Charles gave a lot of detail into pack life and hierarchy. It’s clear that she not only did her research, but that she enjoys the topic she wrote about. The book is very well written, especially for the price. The author, Nicky Charles, sells this book for free. She is the type of author that gets more joy from simply having her books read instead of making a commission. This is a dying art amongst writers and I’m extremely lucky to have stumbled across such a great writer. Check out her work, you won’t regret it!
