A Sliver of Shadows

Series: Abby Sinclair #2
Publication Date: February 28, 2012
Genres: ,
Pages: 368
Grab It: Amazon Book Depository

Just when her new life as a TouchStone — a mortal bound to help OtherFolk cross between Faery and human worlds — seems to be settling down, Abby Sinclair is left in charge when the Protectorate, Moira, leaves for the Faery Court. And when the Protectorate’s away…let’s just say things spiral out of control when a spell on Abby backfires and the Faery Queen declares the Doors between their worlds officially closed.
The results are disastrous for both sides: OtherFolk trapped in the mortal world are beginning to fade, while Faerie is on the brink of war with the daemons of Hell. Along with her brooding elven prince Talivar and sexy incubus Brystion, Abby ventures to the CrossRoads in an attempt to override the Queen’s magic. But nothing in this beautiful, dangerous realm will compare to the discoveries she’s making about her past, her destiny, and what she will sacrifice for those she loves

My Thoughts on A Silver of Shadow:

It’s not very often that a story has the ability to make you laugh, and then make you cry. For me, this is typically the foundation for an entertaining story. With A Sliver of Shadow, the second book in the Abby Sinclair series, I would have to agree. I absolutely loved, loved, loved Phin the mini unicorn, and I loved how all the characters interacted with each other. Everyone flowed even during conflict, and even during the fascinating and hilarious love triangle between the ex-boyfriend incubus and faerie prince who is her bodyguard!

This story brings action, romance, sex, mystery, intrigue, and I could go on (and on) forever. What struck my heart chords was the sacrifice that Abby Sinclair gives, and gives, and gives right up to the very end of the story.

Join Abby and her collective band of friends (and lovers!) as they try to restore the virtue of the throne in the land of the faeries. Turn each page as the story unfolds before your eyes and be transported right into the flow of the words.

Due to the sexual nature, and language, I would suggest this book for adult audiences that love supernatural fantasy stories. While there is love and romance found within the pages, this story has so much more to offer. I look forward to reading the rest of the novels, and have found another great author to add to my MUST-READ list.

My Rating

5 out of 5 Controllers

Character Profile: Talivar

Since I’m introducing a new hero of sorts in A Sliver of Shadow, I thought it might be fun to list some fun things about him. So here we go:

Name: Talivar

Race: Fae (specifically a Sidhe, or “High Elf”)

Appearance:  Abby refers to him as a sort of “retro Legolas.”  When we first meet him, he’s a bit like one of those LoTR elves – long brown hair, blue eyes, formal, fairly straight-laced, long and lanky body-type.  About 5’11”. Eventually he ends up cutting his hair to chin length and grows a bit of hipster chin scruff. He also has some blue Celtic tattoos on his cheeks and wears an eye patch over his left eye. He wears silver hoops in at least one ear at any given time. (Which he lost about 200 years ago – not explaining how here because I don’t want to spoil people.)

He also has a series of scars on his left side and his left leg was badly mangled for the same reasons he lost his eye. The realities of his physical situation have earned him the nickname “The Crippled Prince” and have removed all chances of him ever sitting on the throne. (Due to Faery politics, which requires physical perfection in their rulers.) He hides a good deal of his injuries behind a glamour most of the time, and he’s inwardly rather bitter about the whole thing, though he covers it up with a dry sense of humor. He has times of ruthlessness if someone he cares about is threatened.

Family: He is the older half-brother of Moira, the Faery Protectorate of Portsmyth – who is also Abby’s boss. He is tremendously loyal to Moira and somewhat over-protective of her at times.  His relationship with his mother is strained at the best of times for various reasons I’m not revealing here. 😉

Occupation: Currently Abby’s live-in bodyguard, although he does take on the mantle of Protectorate when the opportunity presents itself.

Likes: Organic food, coffee, good beer. Bon Iver. Adele. The Waterboys.

Dislikes:  Liars. He’s had a lot of betrayal in his life and prefers honesty above all else.  (Though he’s not always above lying to himself.)

Pop Culture: Although he often finds himself bemused by most modern day entertainment, he does enjoy reading. He’s rather fond of comic books as well, particularly Sandman. He also appreciates classic B&W monster movies.  And Abby taught him how to dance the Hustle one night. He’s surprisingly good at it.

Cooking:  He’s terrible. He was a soldier in the elvish army for quite some time and can whip up some basic stuff, but is hopeless at anything complicated.  He’s been known to burn coffee on a regular basis and his eggs are nearly always runny.

Random: He’s rather ticklish along the right hip bone.

A Sliver of Shadow Excerpt:

“Who’s my little man?” The unicorn crooned at Benjamin and then winced when a hank of beard became the baby’s newest form of entertainment.

“Keep that up and you’ll be a baldy chin,” I retorted. “And I don’t recall asking your opinion. Not that that’s ever stopped you before. Talivar around?”

“Nope, burned the coffee again. Ran out to get more.” A snort escaped him. “He’s even worse at it then you are.”

“Probably something about being a prince and not having to actually cook for himself. At least he’s trying. More than I can say for you.” I stooped to search for my Crocs, pushing through dust bunnies and clumps of what suspiciously looked like unicorn droppings. “Christ, Phin, use the toilet or go outside or something.” I snatched my hand away.

“That’s not me. I think you’ve got mice.” His tone became wheedling.

“I’ll bet. Just clean it up.”

“With what? Gonna turn my tail into a broom?” The furred tuft in question flicked as if to make the point.

“I’m sure you’ll come up with something. Besides, aren’t unicorn horns proof against poison? Purifying water, that sort of thing? Surely something that can bring a dead man back to life can disinfect like Lysol?”

About Allison Pang

A marine biologist in a former life, Allison Pang turned to a life of crime to finance her wild spending habits and need to collect Faberge eggs. A cat thief of notable repute, she spends her days sleeping and nights scaling walls and wooing dancing boys….Well, at least the marine biology part is true. But she was taloned by a hawk once.  She also loves Hello Kitty, sparkly shoes, and gorgeous violinists.

She spends her days in Northern Virginia working as a cube grunt and her nights waiting on her kids and cats, punctuated by the occasional husbandly serenade. Sometimes she even manages to write. Mostly she just makes it up as she goes.
