Showcase Showdown (6): Shatter Me vs. HALO Anniversary

Welcome to this week’s edition of Showcase Showdown: Two Books, Two Games, a new way to bridge the nerdy gap between gaming and reading.  This is a weekly highlight created to place a spotlight on books and games that are on one of my various Wish Lists.   Each week’s list will consist of…duh…two books and two games that come out during that week, and my top reasons for wanting each of them.  Books will range from comics and manga, to romance and non-fiction.  As for games, I will feature any game (PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Wii, DS, iOS, etc.) that is on my MUST-Play-Now List.  If you would like to join along, leave a comment and let me know what’s on your must-read and/or must-play list.  Blogger’s can also link to the post on their blog and discuss their picks with their readers.  You don’t have to be a gamer, nor do gamers’ have to be avid readers, just find a couple of things you are looking forward to the most this week and let me (and others) know why.

Going Toe to Toe This Week:
Two Young Adult novels, Shatter Me featuring a girl who might become a weapon, and The Space Between with a half demon/fallen angel, are going up against Ezio in Assassin’s Creed Revelations and Master Chief in Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary.

Everything is made of steel, even the flowers. How can you love anything in a place like this?

Daphne is the half-demon, half-fallen angel daughter of Lucifer and Lilith. Life for her is an endless expanse of time, until her brother Obie is kidnapped – and Daphne realizes she may be partially responsible. Determined to find him, Daphne travels from her home in Pandemonium to the vast streets of Earth, where everything is colder and more terrifying. With the help of the human boy she believes was the last person to see her brother alive, Daphne glimpses into his dreams, discovering clues to Obie’s whereabouts. As she delves deeper into her demonic powers, she must navigate the jealousies and alliances of the violent archangels who stand in her way. But she also discovers, unexpectedly, what it means to love and be human in a world where human is the hardest thing to be.

This second novel by rising star Brenna Yovanoff is a story of identity, discovery, and a troubled love between two people struggling to find their place both in our world and theirs.

Why it’s a MUST-Read:

  • A story about a half angel/demon girl, that’s enough to get anyone excited.
  • Check out the awesome cover, it’s pretty, inviting, mysterious, and absolutely gorgeous!
  • A novel of discovery about a girl who must find her place on Earth and in the demon realm, I am interested to see what path she chooses, and the choices that she makes that will determine her decision.

Shatter Me

By Tahereh Mafi

  • Pub. Date: November 2011
  • Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers
  • Format: Hardcover , 352pp
  • Age Range: Young Adult
  • ISBN-13: 9780062085481
  • ISBN: 0062085484

The last time she did, it was an accident, but The Reestablishment locked her up for murder. No one knows why Juliette’s touch is fatal. As long as she doesn’t hurt anyone else, no one really cares. The world is too busy crumbling to pieces to pay attention to a 17-year-old girl. Diseases are destroying the population, food is hard to find, birds don’t fly anymore, and the clouds are the wrong color.

The Reestablishment said their way was the only way to fix things, so they threw Juliette in a cell. Now so many people are dead that the survivors are whispering war– and The Reestablishment has changed its mind. Maybe Juliette is more than a tortured soul stuffed into a poisonous body. Maybe she’s exactly what they need right now.

Juliette has to make a choice: Be a weapon. Or be a warrior.

Why it’s a MUST-Read:

  • The premise of this story sounds so intriguing. Not being able to touch anyone, and having to choose whether or not you want to be a weapon or a warrior, sounds like my kind of thrill ride.
  • I don’t know about you, but I had to do a double take several times on the cover. At first glance I thought it was a pretty model walking down a runway, then as my eyes adjusted I realized that stuff behind her was broken glass. Or maybe it’s paint? I’m still not sure but glass seems more fitting. Pretty nice artwork, very eye-catching.

Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary

  • Published by: Microsoft Game Studios
  • Developed by: Saber Interactive / 343 Industries
  • Genre: First-Person Shooter
  • Release Date: US: November 15, 2011
  • MSRP: $39.99
  • M for Mature: Blood and Gore, Violence

Why it’s a MUST-Play:

  •      November 15, 2011, marked the 10 year anniversary of Halo and the Xbox, so you know I had to mention this game (Fangirl perspective aside of course).
  •    Halo is the game that propelled Microsoft into the gaming forefront bringing along with it living room co-op, online multiplayer gaming, unified ID’s (Gamertags) and friends list, voice chat, and a messaging system. Halo was not only present in the center of this gaming movement, it became a staple of what games and gaming should strive to accomplish.

  • What’s new in HALO Anniversary?
    1.  Skulls – Bringing back a favorite from HALO 2 and 3.
    2. New Hidden Terminals – The new terminals offer cryptic text and animated clips which offer insight into the Forerunners and HALO 4.
    3.  Achievements – Finally, for those of us who love achievement hunting, we can now get achievements for this game. How awesome is that!
    4. Kinect SupportHALO Anniversary marks the first inclusion of Kinect support in the HALO franchise allowing players to give simple command during gameplay. Since Microsoft has stated that the future of Xbox is with the Kinect, it was only natural they included Kinect Support in their supreme money making machine, HALO.  Simply a no-brainier.

    Why it’s a MUST-Play:

    • If you believe all the hype then this game should be on everyone’s radar.
    • I have never played any of the Assassins Creed games so I have no idea what the story is about. However, after doing some research and digging, I think I may be missing out. So I am willing to give this game a shot. And with Black Friday coming up next week, getting it on sale is making this game look even better.
    • Besides, who doesn’t want to be an assassin? Right?

That’s it for this week, hope you enjoyed my picks. See you all next time!
