Review gold new 2-min

When I first began Split I was a little nervous. Shy was a hard character for me to get to know and like on a personal level (not sure why I just didn’t gravitate to her as a character). However, see there’s this guy (or should I say guy’s). Two sweet, charming, on-the-edge guys that stole my heart. Lucas/Gage is a damaged soul in desperate need of saving. Every chapter with them made me crave another one, and another one after that, so much I never wanted the story to end. I devoured Split in a day and haven’t regretted a single moment.

Our story beings with Shyann, a small-town girl with big city dreams, who foils her broadcasting job by protecting a girl and punching her cameraman live on air. After losing her job, Shy is desperate to go anywhere but home to her brother and dad, and the suffocating life she ran from after her mother’s death. Though with no money and no job prospects, she’s right back where she began, the middle of nowhere. Upon her return, Shy doesn’t immediately try to fit back in with the Payson townsfolk and rejects the idea of being “stuck” in such an ordinary life. Her goals of the city are within her grasp and just a few paychecks away. Until she meets Lucas…

Lucas is a man with only one plan, hide and survive. For as long as he can remember he’s suffered from painful blackouts, blackouts that leave him with no memory of his time “away” and subject to a lot of questions. By casting away his emotions and attachments to other people, he finally learns how to survive with his nightmare and make a seemingly normal life for himself. Somehow, Lucas finds solace in the small town of Payson and comforted by his boss and his son.  But when the boss’s daughter shows up smart mouthed and sexy, she threatens to undo his entire world.

Then there another guy, Gage. Gage is the type of guy a girl swoons over. Strong, protective, demanding, and once those walls are broken, gentle and sweet. It’s no secret, between the blurb and the cover, Gage is Lucas’s alter ego, the reason for his blackouts. He’s the fighter, Lucas’s protector in every way imaginable. No matter the cost. However, how far is too far for a guy to go to protect everyone and everything he loves?

Okay, holy crap. Split is an incredible standalone romance! At first, I was weary because I didn’t like Shy, yet after getting a taste of Lucas/Gage and his backstory … I was hooked. Gah, I wish there was a book two! Gage revved me up, Lucas made me melt. All of it made me crave more of them. Even though I grew to like Shy once she started accepting who she was and coming to terms with her mother’s death, I still only wanted more of the boys. Both of them. Yum.

Overall, this is a hard review to write without spoilers (there’s so much going on you guys!). If you love romances – hot and hearty romances with a ton of mystery – and boys with shadowy pasts, you’ll love Split. I promise.

“You can’t jump.”

She narrows her eyes on me. “Of course I can.”

“Is it safe?”

My grip on her grows tighter and she steps close enough that I can feel the heat of her breasts brush against my ribs. “Lucas, do you trust me?”

“No.” The word comes out on a shaky whisper.

A gentle grin softens her face and with both her hands she works to relax my hold enough for her to slip free. Seconds later she turns, takes four long strides, and disappears off the rock cliff.

A holler that can only be described as guttural exhilaration echoes off the canyon walls and slices through the trees.

I race to the edge and there’s nothing but a circle of white bubbles marring the once shimmering pond.

I wait for her to surface, and just when I’m about to jump in and rescue her, her head pops up out of the water with a feral howl.

“That was amazing!” She waves at me. “The water is perfect!”

With adrenaline coursing through my veins, I allow myself a moment to wonder what it would be like to be as free as Shyann. Everything I do is weighed against the danger of doing it. The threat of blacking out always pulling me back to walk the safer, less risky side of any situation. But something about her makes me want to try harder, makes me want to take a risk like other twenty-five-year-old guys. The sound of her squealing lights a fire in my chest that has me wanting to jump.

Risking a blackout might be worth the few seconds of euphoria I haven’t felt since…I can’t remember.

I think of backing away and yelling for her to meet me at the truck, but something pulls me toward her. Part of me wonders if it’s nothing more than wanting to be close, to keep her safe, because she belongs to Mr. Jennings and I owe him. But even as the thought enters my mind, so does another.

I want her to like me.

I want her to see me as brave.

I want to know what it’s like to be normal.
