Spoilers…Proceed With Caution…
There are authors and then there are AUTHORS. Authors whose words are so freaking striking they make you go flipping insane when their words end. Beautiful, beautiful words strung together as if they’re a melody waiting to be sung or shouted from the highest rooftop. Sometimes, I wonder if I actually fell in love with Mara or if my swooning heart simply melted over the words Michelle Hodkin wrote: dark, disturbing, twisted, crafty, sneaky, mind-boggling, shocking, heart-breaking, tear-inducing, bi*ch-I’m-fabulous words. Ugh. This series … this series…
You Mara … you complete me.
Mara Dyer’s story is utterly tragic. And since the beginning (please, if you haven’t read any of these books then YOU must start now), we’ve had nothing but questions. Questions about her “powers”, those WTF flashbacks/dreams, her name!!!, and her sanity. WHY are there only three books!?!?! Ugh. To conclude this trilogy, I thought The Retribution of Mara Dyer was pretty dang EPIC. So much happened in those 470 pages my mind kept getting whiplash from all the neck jerking I had to do because that’s how fast I was devouring the book. Did we get all the answers? No. Are there still dire questions I’d like answered? Yes. Would I spend another Saturday not moving from my bed until I finished the book? Absolutely!
But that ending… /dies
The fact that Noah and Mara chose each other instead of saving the world was crazy. It’s not that often do we get to see characters do the opposite of what we assume is the morally sound choice. I really expected them to do the (technically) “right thing” and go their separate ways. I was ready for it, my heart hardened in preparation. I did NOT see that coming when they decided to stay together (even though it might be a bit selfish). #Love Is Mara really just a compulsion for Noah, someone he just can’t quit? Lord, who knows. But it made their love seem all the more fascinating and surreal.
Dang it’s so hard to say goodbye to a series or characters you feel you can’t live without. Characters you’ve grown to adore and consider friends. I sincerely hope that Hodkin has more in store for us. I’d love to get more information or a spin-off series about the “Professor”, her friends, others that were in the center, how the name Mara came about, the “abilities” – sighs, there is just SO much!
Overall, I would give the Mara Dyer Trilogy an overall rating of 4.5 Controllers, and The Retribution of Mara Dyer 5 Controllers. I’m only knocking off that half controller for the series because there were so many questions still unresolved. A lot was left W-I-D-E open so I hope that means we will see more stories from this world in the future!
