Showcase Showdown: Two Books, Two Games

Welcome everyone to the first ever Showcase Showdown: Two Books, Two Games, a new way to bridge the nerdy gap between gaming and reading.  This is a weekly highlight created to place a spotlight on  books and games that are on one of my various Wish Lists.  Each week’s list will consist of…duh… two books and two games that come out during that week, and my top 3 to 5 reasons for wanting each of them.  Books will range from comics and manga, to romance and non-fiction.  As for games, I will feature any game (PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Wii, DS, iOS, etc.) that is on my MUST-Play-Now List. If you would like to join along, leave a comment and let me know what’s on your must-read and/or must-play list. You don’t have to be a gamer, nor do gamer’s have to be avid readers, just find a couple of things you are looking forward to the most this week and let me (and others) know why.

Their love was meant to be.

When Megan Rosenberg moves to Ireland, everything in her life seems to fall into place. After growing up in America, she’s surprised to find herself feeling at home in her new school. She connects with a group of friends, and she is instantly drawn to darkly handsome Adam DeRÍs.

But Megan is about to discover that her feelings for Adam are tied to a fate that was sealed long ago—and that the passion and power that brought them together could be their ultimate destruction.
Why it’s a Must-Read:

  • The cover is absolutely amazing! The young girls dress at the bottom reminds me of water colors being splashed onto paper. I love how the vibrant blue is offset by the slate gray background. It’s quite breathtaking to stare at, the cover drew me in immediately and I can’t help but want to pick up this book.
  • The setting takes place in one of my favorite parts of the world, Ireland. In fact I love the country so much my daughter has an Irish name.
  • This book has been getting rave reviews, and some reviews have talked negatively about Fallon’s writing style. I am interested to see what all the fuss is about. Nothing draws my attention more than controversy.
  • Even though the plot sounds generic, I am hoping the supernatural elements are enough to keep me sucked into the plot.

    Serpent’s Kiss (Elder Races #3)

    By: Thea Harrison

    • Pub. Date: October 2011
    • Publisher: Penguin Group (USA)
    • Format: Mass Market Paperback , 336pp
    • Sales Rank: 799
    • Series: Elder Races Series #3
    • ISBN-13: 9780425244401
    • ISBN: 0425244407

Recently, Vampire Queen Carling’s power has become erratic, forcing her followers to flee. Wyr sentinel Rune is drawn to the ailing Queen and decides to help find a cure for the serpent’s kiss-the vampyric disease that’s killing her. With their desire for each other escalating they will have to rely on each other if they have any hope of surviving the serpent’s kiss…
    Why it’s a Must-Read:

  • I am all about reading books of a series, and since I purchased Dragon Bound (Elder Races #1), this one is automatically on my to-read list.
  • Dragon Bound was of course, about a dragon. This book however is about a disease called the Serpents Kiss.  If that’s not intriguing and eye-catching enough I don’t know what is.
  • Thea Harrison is a magnificent author, and I can’t stop at just one, or two of her books.

    MUST-PLAY Games:

    • Available for:  (PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360)
    • Developer: id Software
    • Publisher: Bethesda Softworks
    • To be released: October 4, 2011
    •  MSRP: $59.99

    Why it’s a Must-Play:

  • A mix between Borderlands and Fallout, I can definitely roll with that.
  • It’s a shooter with a story. How often can we say that about a first-person shooter? I am really hoping for a story that’s on par, or at least as entertaining as Mass Effect or Dragon Age Origins. Heck I would even settle for a story as crafty as Fable 2.  Actually I am just glad that it has a story and is a story-driven game, period.  I will play it on that basis alone.
  • I thrive on visuals, which is why I loved Child of Eden and BulletstormRAGE looks just as visually appealing and I can’t wait to dive into the world and see what it has to offer. Nothing says open-world and RPG (role-playing game) like character customization, leveling up, and free roaming.
  • Sometimes you just want to kill sh**.  Every time I look at the screenshots that’s exactly how I feel. This game makes me want to pistol whip someone out in the wasteland.

    Just Dance 3 (KINECT Compatible)

    • Available for:  (Wii, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360)
    • Developer: Ubisoft Paris
    • Publisher: Ubisoft
    • To be released: October 7, 2011
    • MSRP: $39.99

    Why it’s a Must-Play:

  • Okay I must admit I spent countless hours playing Just Dance with my sister on her Wii.  The Just Dance series had me hooked from the first time we tested the game during the middle of Black Friday (the day after Thanksgiving extravaganza) shopping at our local Best Buy.  We had so much fun goofing off we completely forgot hundreds of shoppers were standing around watching us get our grove on. It was entertaining, exciting, and different, and I am so happy that it is now on the KINECT!
  • Did I mention its now on the KINECT?  Holding a controller while dancing just seems to give you an extra piece of baggage that you don’t really need (sorry PS3 and Wii users). With KINECT integration, players are allowed to move freely and really let loose.  Dancing and earning achievements has just become that much easier.
  • 4-Player Co-op…enough said.

Ta-ta for now and see you next week!
