Our Rambling Thoughts on Chapters 1-9:
This week we started Destined for an Early Grave, which is Book #4 in the Night Huntress series by Jeannie Frost. It brings us a fresh story, featuring our beloved duo Cat and Bones. Well sort of, this time no one appears to want Cat dead. Gregor just wants his wife back!
H: Well we kind of guess that from the back cover, but whoa. Mencheres (sp?) apparently intervened in Cat’s life prior to her meeting Bones. She was getting married, maybe, to Gregor who is also known as the Dreamsnatcher.
D: Maybe it’s just me, but the whole time I was reading “dreamsnatcher” I kept inserting “pantysnatcher”. LOLzzzz Okay, yeah I’m a total gutter-head but clearly Frost couldn’t have made that name and not think someone would make the connection. I did enjoy reading about Bones and Cat in Paris on vacation. I enjoyed seeing them happy and relaxed. And Cat seemed to be more at ease that way. Too bad it didn’t last long…
H: While I did kind of yawn over yet another person fawning over Cat, I’m a bit intrigued over Gregor, Mencheres, and this whole memory erasing bit. It gives an air of mystery, and many unanswered questions. Did Cat really love Gregor? Did she bind herself to him willingly, if at all?
D: So, here we go again with old ass vampires having strange ass abilities. Had this been in the last book At Graves End…I might have rolled my eyes and called bullsh*t. However, since this is focusing (so far) on a single power and its essential to the overall story AND it’s at the beginning and not way off at the end…it works. Erasing memories seems to fall under the category of magic. So, I guess Mencheres having magic is OK. Not that I think it’s great. I don’t know. I just…ugh……
H: Throughout this ordeal, we see Bones struggle big time. He’s even losing it on Cat, lashing out and doing mean things with just his words. I feel for her, because we all know Bones has skeletons. Heck we can’t pick up a book without having him rub a past lover in her face –on purpose or by accident. It’s difficult to love and devote yourself to a man like that and I don’t think I could do it.
D: Bones doesn’t bother me actually. His reactions seem natural because Cat, let’s face it…she doesn’t trust him completely. If she did, she wouldn’t always be keeping things from him. You think for one second I’d not tell the supposed love-of-my-life that something is after me in my nightmares? We see this time and time again, she withholds information. Because she doesn’t want to upset him or cause a fight. I guess we all do that in relationships from time to time, but not ALL the time. Then expect the other person to not be mad when they find out. Duh….!
H: I get why she wants to remember. It’s disheartening losing a piece of yourself and knowing it. Bones needs to understand that the outcome of knowing doesn’t change that she loves him now. Realizing she may or may not have bound herself to Gregor won’t change her heart and as always, they’d find a way. True love always finds away. I think for once in his immortal and perhaps mortal life, Bones is threatened. He needs to put the big girl panties on and realize that hurting Cat isn’t the answer.
D: Well, I think both parties need to man up. Like Heather said, Bones needs to understand it won’t change anything, and Cat needs to start acting like she loves Bones and let him be the alpha man in this relationship. Ugh…just ugh….
The fear of that made my reply snappy. “Hey, Walks Like An Egyptian, how about for once you drop the formal stuff and talk like you live in the twenty-first century?”
“The shit’s gonna splatter, start buggin’, yo,” Mencheres responded instantly.
I stared at him, then burst out laughing, which was highly inappropriate considering the very grave warning he’d just conveyed.
“I find nothing funny in this,” Bones muttered.
