The desire for revenge can never be sated . . .
When her beloved high school teacher appears on her doorstep, Deputy Chief Jess Harris is flooded with fond memories-until the woman says she’s about to be charged with murder. Called to the scene of the crime, Jess learns the victim of the bizarre and brutal slaying was a member of Birmingham’s famed “Five.”
Twelve years ago, the Five were rich, popular high school seniors who threw one wild last party. Two social outcasts were invited to play in the “loser games.” The next morning, one player killed himself. Now Jess fears that an invitation to an upcoming class reunion may have forced the Five to play a new deadly game. As Jess fights to keep her former teacher from suspicion-and her relationship with Chief Dan Burnett separate from her work life-she knows she is caught in a vicious cycle of vengeance. And the killer is far from finished . . .[/note]

Three photos of three unknown women. Sent to Deputy Chief Jess Harris by the Player, one of the world’s most sadistic killers. The Player is taunting her, and Jess is more than ready to take on his challenge. Only one thing could distract her from the Player’s deadly game: the appearance of a clue to long-unsolved cases. For years Birmingham’s children were vanishing-one per year, always on a full moon-until the disappearances stopped and the Man in the Moon case went cold. No leads on the children were ever found-until now.
Jess has no choice but to pursue the case. Someone is reaching out to her, sending her mementos of the missing children, and the citizens of Birmingham deserve justice. But after years of silence, has the Man in the Moon really resurfaced? Or is he just another pawn in the Player’s game? [/note]
- Welcome back Debra to Mother/Gamer/Writer. During your last interview, we talked about writing, self and traditional publishing, and Power Book 3 in the Faces of Evil Series. Today we are introducing Revenge Book 5 of the series to our readers. Can you tell us what’s happened in the series so far?
Hi! It’s great to be back! In RAGE, Book 4, we saw Jess and her team solve the heinous murder of a cop’s wife. The case hit close to home for the whole department and it was a tough one. A young autistic boy was a key witness. Jess found a new home, a garage apartment with a quirky landlord. Detectives Wells and Harper have taken their relationship to the next level and Dan and Jess are getting there with theirs.
REVENGE, Book 5, resurrects ugly secrets for some of Birmingham’s wealthiest residences. We meet a couple of interesting folks from Jess’s past and see more of her sister. Bullying is a sensitive spot for me and REVENGE explores the painful and ugly results of bullying gone too far.
- Thus far, which book would you consider your favorite? Or which character holds a special place in your heart?
I think OBSESSION will always be my favorite but Book 6, RUTHLESS, coming next month holds a close second. Really I love them all. The characters are like family and writing the stories is a pleasure. I love learning where they’re going to take me next.
- Where do you draw your inspiration for each book in the series? Do you find it difficult to come up with a new mystery for each book?
My inspiration for the mystery/suspense elements in the book come from the motives that drive the villains. Each book explores a new level of evil.
- Can you tell us a little bit about your overall process for writing a mystery/thriller?
With this series, I start with the motive, then the victim or victims. I decide who the killer will be and then set up the elements and scenes that will take us through the journey from the discovery of the first victim to closing the case. I plan the story in reverse and then start writing from the beginning.
- Without giving too much away, what were your favorite scenes, chapters, or characters to write in Revenge?
I introduce a new character from Jess’s past in REVENGE. This man is going to play a big role as we move forward in the series. The scene where she speaks to him for the first time in more than twenty years was a lot of fun to write. We see more of Dr. Sylvia Baron in this one and she is quickly becoming one of my fav characters!
- Lastly, is there anything you would like to say to your fans, or to people who are considering reading your novel?
Thank you. Thank you for spending your time with the stories I love to write. Thank you for spending your hard-earned money on my stories. Thank you for trusting me to make the story worth your while each time you buy one of my books.
