Our Rambling Thoughts on Chapters 31 – The End:
[/heading]
I finished up the book a week and a half ago, so please bear with me.
First off … Butt Secks … really? I’m not a prude or anything when it comes to shmexiness, but why did we need it in the story? Is that what Bones likes? Or was this some male thing to claim all her holes? I don’t know, it was just kind of like … sex sex sex BUTT SECKS! I like sex to be explained when it’s out of the norm. Was he spicing things up? Will this be an ongoing thing? We aren’t told so only time will tell. Again, there’s nothing wrong with healthy sexual exploration, but it felt misplaced within the scene to me.
OMG, Tate! I loved his reaction to Cat and how he threw her words back in her face. But I’m equally surprised that he slept with Annette. She needed a good lay and all (that wasn’t Bones) but Tate? Wow, I’d excepted it to be Juan who fell first. My heads still shaking on this one.
On to the action, the big mission almost flopped because of Cat. Poor Bones. When will she ever learn that he’s lived longer, he’s a bleedin’ vampire, and he KNOWS their world and laws. Really, I mean Ian ate that right up and tossed it back in their faces. It almost cost her … well herself and of course her relationship too. I’m happy for strong Cat, but she needs to learn that she’s not in this alone.
Max … son-of-a … But he implies something very, very hefty that I called in book one. I honestly don’t know if I believe he raped Justina as she’s said. It’s not that the hate isn’t justified either way, but it’s the words he said that plants the doubt. I think he was mortified at what he’d become, or perhaps holding onto a bit of humanity. Maybe Don’s wrong and they never gave Max a choice. I think we’ll have to let that one play out.
Bones … sigh. His biggest achievement, besides rescuing Cat and threatening everyone … the sex scene. The whole freaking chapter … naked imagery … in the throes of passion … yummy. But seriously, he brings Cat the best present, her fallen team mate, Dave comes back as Ghoul*. I mean that’s way better than roses or chocolates because she needs her team as much as they need her.
Overall, I really liked this book. I’m enthralled with the whole series and I’m finding it difficult to read anything else. I’ve even felt inspired to write more after finishing each week. Jeannie Frost’s really done a wonderful job and I can only hope it continues. I’ve already bought the next three books, and in paperback too.
**** Ok so for those that know me, you know I’m a stickler for research. It’s stated that Dave was embalmed, which means his vital organs were removed. When they dig him up, he has his lungs and heart still. While this is fantasy (who wishes it were real raise your hand! Me!), it’s little things like this that drive me bonkers.
Since Heather said everything I was thinking, I’ll only add that: a) this series ROCKS MY SOCKS OFF and b) Cat needs to get a grip and realize she knows NOTHING of vampire laws. I think that was by far her stupidest mistake. I know she thinks she can handle herself but not only was she wrong, she put everyone and the entire mission in danger with her lack of knowledge!!! I love Cat to death, but I hope she starts to ask more question, learn some history, and truly learn to trust her new husband. I think this is the only time I’ve truly been pissed off at her since the series began. I need to see her become less of a hothead and more of a rational thinker. Come on Cat, get a freaking grip!!!!
I truly loved the ending this time around. It was nice not to end on and epic WTF and have some happy tears. I can’t wait to get started on the next one! Oh and NOOOOOOO MOM! *insert more happy tears*
Quotable:
Tate tilted his head. “Don’t kiss me first,” he snidely remarked. (said to Bones)
“Justina Crawfield!” Max snapped. “Going to ask me what color panties she wore next?”

HALFWAY TO THE GRAVE Recap:
ONE FOOT IN THE GRAVE Recap:
The Schedule for July:AT GRAVE’S END
(Discussion will be held on Sunday, July 7 due to the holiday)
This month’s schedule has been adjusted to account for the holiday with our first discussion changed to July 7. Also please note, we will take a mini break July 29-August 2 so there is no required reading that week. Our next reading will begin promptly on August 3 with DESTINED FOR AN EARLY GRAVE. Please feel free to read at your own pace and remember that our discussions each week will contain spoilers! And we don’t want anyone to be spoiled of all the awesomeness that is Cat and Bones! Happy Reading!
Cat going off and doing things on her own is something that irked the hell out of me. Now, whether you read the Sookie Stackhouse novels or not, one thing I liked about Sookie was that she normally got all the facts first before she went off and did something crazy. Cat tries so hard to be “tough”, that I think if she just backs off just a little bit she’d be perfect.
I think they are going to be an awesome married couple! However, as AimeeKay suggested below, I do think they will have some sort of issues being married as vampires vs not being married as humans. IDK…
The whole butt smex thing didn’t bother me too much….it was really random though. Actually, the whole chapter dedicated to sex itself was pretty awesome. Kinda reminded me of Gena Showalter for a bit!
I think I’m sitting right at 4 stars for this one and 4.5 for whole series so far.
Like I said, the buttsecks just felt kinda out there. It wasn’t a OMG moment, but more like a OK then … moment. But yes, I loved the whole chapter devoted to sex. Authors need to do that more often.
I’m on 4 for this one too. You know how I get with research
Ooh, good point about the embalming. I didn’t even realize that. Kind of a plot hole cause fantasy or not, thing like that need to be explained and work as we would logically expect them. But I loved Dave coming back as a Ghoul. Yay for that being possible in this world. I was wondering if they would do that since she put so much vamp blood in him to try to get him to heal.
Tate… everything he does seems to be to get Cat’s attention in one way or another. Cat’s instantly jealous of Annette and they’re not exactly friendly, so if Tate sleeps with Annette, that will get Cat’s attention.
Cat is getting annoying with going off plan and thinking she has to do everything her way. She’s gotta learn someday right? We’ll see. Hasn’t happened so far.
Mommy dearest.. her story line gets interesting in one of the future books but she doesn’t stop being obnoxious in my opinion.
I gave this 4 stars.
Glad to hear her mom has a purpose, cause I don’t know how much more of her I can stomach.
I was glad they were able to bring Dave back. I’d assumed something would happen with him from the slight hint dropping mid story.
Ok…I say I kinda got whole sex thing if only because Bones told her he was going to do things that would make her blush….But still it wasn’t like he really prepped her for it or anything….so *shrug* still not sure if it made complete sense.
I think Tate slept with Annette just to piss off Cat. Flat out I think he knew Cat hated her and wanted to try to mess with her head. I don’t think it worked as well as he planned though.
I really thought Annette was going to turn on Cat, but at the same time I wasn’t sure, and as for Cat deviating from the mission…I hate to say I kinda expected her to put her foot in her mouth and mess it up. But in the end it forced her to choose between her hunt for vengeance and her love for Bones so I’m kinda glad she did.
I have to agree with you on the whole embalming thing. While I’m glad they were able to bring Dave back I think it should have been noticed at some point…
I also agree that for a while I didn’t believe Cat’s mom was raped by her dad. I mean maybe he was some psycho rapist before he was turned and just used his new found powers to mess with women even more…but that would have just brought more attention to vampires in general and someone would have taken care of him from the vampire side so their secrets weren’t revealed.
I can’t wait to see how Cat and Bones handle being married. I think Bones is all for it but there’s one part were Cat says that they are married in Vampire society not human…so maybe there are gonna be some issues there…?
I LOVE the series so far!! I can’t wait to start the next book and I’ve picked up all the rest in the series so I’m ready to go!
I can see there being issues with the human marriage thing. What irks me though is that she’s all for reminding everyone that she’s half vamp when it comes to sleeping with Bones, but she’s got to realize that she’s part of that world. Heck she was apart of it before Bones but didn’t know it. Granted that’s a good thing seeing as she wasn’t sired. But she needs to stop skirting both worlds and admitt that she’s apart of them both.
I think Cat’s dad planted those things in her head. Part of me wonders if it was an FU, or maybe a message to his brother. I think everyone was surprised that a baby was born from it. Now whether or not mom was drunk or green-eyed, IDK. That’s still rape too in my book.
I loved this book and am really enjoying this series. I adore Cat, but I really wish she would have run her intent to challenge Max by Bones first so he could explain to her the difficulties of the situation. I am glad that Bones was able to protect her from herself. I look forward to what married life will mean for both Cat and Bones. Tate and Annette took me by surprise and I do think it was a little bit about getting back at Cat. I really enjoyed this book and would give it a 4 out of 5, the series so far would be a 4 out of 5 as well. I love reading these books just because they are always so enjoyable. I love the characters, the dialogue, and can’t wait to read more. I absolutely can’t wait for Justina’s reaction to her new son-in-law! I also look forward to finding out how Dave does as a ghoul. So much to come!
I get in this case, and perhaps all throughout, that it keeps us readers guessing, but this time was a big deal. She almost lost Bones and not to death. I think that she could eventually come back from, but what Ian had planned was a million times worse. She’d already proven how difficult it was to know he was out there and because of that, she couldn’t move forward. Even Noah was a joke to her.
